Chace Crawford Tries Out a '50s Look

Tattoos and a pompadour – this isn't the Chace Crawford you're used to.

The 24-year-old star of Gossip Girl and the upcoming Footloose remake adopts a tough-yet-stylish '50s persona in new photos in the September issue of Interview magazine.

Going against type is refreshing for Crawford, who's traditionally been cast in clean-cut roles, he says: "It's good to switch things up. I did all of this stuff early, and they always wanted the same thing, the same look, the same deal, and I'd think, 'That's not what it's about.' "

Crawford is branching out with his acting, playing a drug dealer in Twelve and getting his funk on with Footloose. The latter involves changing his physical type, too.

"I'm going to try to get shredded," he says. "And my flexibility has already gone up like double. ... There's some kickboxing, some Muay Thai. And I'm learning fundamentals like breakdancing."

So far, he tells the magazine, the Footloose preparations are going well. "I am confident because I knew I had rhythm – and I'm athletic," Crawford says. "I know I have rhythm, I have it in my brain. And I'm a quick learner."

Crawford 'shuns photographers at birthday'
Chace Crawford snubbed photographers hoping to snap him while celebrating his birthday party, it has been reported.

The Gossip Girl star, who turned 24 on Saturday, flew several guests in to the watch the Bridgehampton Polo match in the Hamptons for the festivities, the New York Post reports.

It is understood that the actor was not keen on having his picture taken inside of his VIP tent, where party guests used strong-arm tactics to keep the paparazzi away from the recently named Hottest Bachelor by People.

Crawford reportedly fled the scene before the celebration ended due to the over-aggressive photographers.

Chace Crawford Celebrates Turning 24
Chace Crawford may be PEOPLE's Hottest Bachelor – but he still has close ties to his old friends, who helped him celebrate his birthday over the weekend.

The Gossip Girl star flew 15 of his old high school and college pals from Dallas to New York to celebrate his 24th birthday – which was Saturday – along with his new friends, such as costar Sebastian Stan and actor Toby Hemingway.

"His hometown friends got along great with all his New York city pals," a source tells PEOPLE.

The whole gang then flew from the city out to Watermill, New York, where they stayed at some private digs for the weekend-long birthday bash. "It was the best birthday Chace ever had because he was amongst his closest friends," says the source.

The group barbequed, ate, drank and were treated meals cooked by a private chef, according to the source. They also played games and went swimming. But it wasn't all chilling on the sand: To raise the excitement level, they chartered a speedboat and went out in kayaks.

And in honor of Crawford's birthday on Saturday, "They, of course, sang happy birthday," says the source.

Chace Crawford Tops PEOPLE's Hottest Bachelors List
The lovely Chace has come out on top in PEOPLE magazine's list of eligible bachelors.

Chace Crawford talks to his parents every day, vacations with his younger sister and – unlike his Gossip Girl character – says dating a married woman is "a definite no." Without question, success (he'll star in the Footloose remake) couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. But what else is behind those blue eyes? Here's a sneak peek of the interview with PEOPLE's Hottest Bachelor!

On his first kiss: "It was fifth grade. Her name was Kiley Smith and she was my best friend's twin sister. It was one of those super-awkward things. We were at camp, on a lake, really picturesque – it¹s kind of seared into memory! We're still friends."

On a perfect date: "All you need is a pool table, beer, an electric jukebox and good conversation. The day a girl beats me in a game of Beirut [a kind of beer pong] is a good sign!"

On dating Carrie Underwood: "I have nothing bad to say about that experience. It was awesome. I just didn't know how to deal with it. I learned a ton about dating someone in that kind of spotlight. It was such a whirlwind, but no regrets."

REFRESH FOR A NEW LAYOUT!

As you can see, we have a lovely new layout. I thought I'd put it up as the site has been online for a year this month. I was also away on vacation, so I wanted to go a small way to make up for the lack of updates.

Speaking of updates, I will catch up over the next few days, so keep checking back.

Crawford 'had five-hour Footloose audition'
Chace Crawford has revealed that he had to endure a gruelling five-hour audition to land the lead role in Footloose.

The actor, who plays Nate Archibald in the CW drama, won the role of Ren McCormack in the Paramount remake after original choice Zac Efron dropped out.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: "I know Zac and we're actually friends. He's gotta make the best choice for his career at this point and I have to make the best for mine and luckily it worked out for both of us.

"[The audition] was, like, five hours of the most rigorous tests ever. I walked out very confident."

He added: "I don’t know if the gymnastics [high bar] scene is going to make it. I’ve got some movement in me, but I’m not a dancer. I need to start stretching now!"

Chace's intensive training for Footloose role
Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford will reportedly undergo an intensive training regime in preparation for his part in Footloose.

The actor, who plays Nate Archibald in the CW drama, landed the lead role of Ren McCormack in the Paramount reboot after original choice Zac Efron dropped out.

"He really sizzles. He has musicality. We need to work with him on music and dance. There are some big shoes to fill. But he has it in him," director Kenny Ortega is quoted as telling Us Weekly.

The 1984 original starred Kevin Bacon as a youth who arrives in a town where dancing is forbidden. Production on the remake is scheduled to start in March 2010.
